These days, more and more people are becoming aware of the impact their clothing choices have on the environment. Sustainable wardrobe has become a major topic of interest for many, and a big part of that is choosing the right color palette for your capsule wardrobe. In this article, we’ll discuss how to create a cohesive and sustainable color palette for your wardrobe in just 4 easy steps. 1. OBSERVE Start by noticing the colors you already feel drawn to. Try to identify if there are any colors in your closet that you already have in large quantities. Then, examine your Pinterest board to see if there are any other colors that should be added. Your closet shows what you’ve worn in the past, while your Pinterest board can give you clues about colors you’d like to add to your capsule wardrobe. Seeing all of your clothes and images at once will help you feel comfortable with the colors and patterns that appeal to you. 2. BASE AND ACCENT COLORS Start with a few basic colors and then add accent colors. Base colors will be the main elements that will make up the basic pieces of your wardrobe (the things you wear most often). Accent colors will be for adding some elements of color and interest. It is best to focus on only 6-9 colors in total initially, so that your sustainable wardrobe can be very versatile. Later, you can carefully add more color, but we recommend starting small. It is useful to build your capsule wardrobe around cool tones (like blue, gray and black) or warm tones (like camel, ivory and burgundy). All the basic colors (like black, white, gray, navy and ivory) will form a minimal color palette. If you love color, you can try to identify a specific color type (like jewel tones or bright colors) so that your pieces will work well together. You can be creative, but make sure that you want to wear each color with the other colors. If there is a color or print that you love but doesn't fit your color palette, you can still keep pieces in that color! Leave it out of the main palette, but look for stand-alone pieces (like dresses or jumpsuits) that you won't have to mix and match with the rest of your capsule wardrobe. 3. PRINTS AND TEXTURES Think about the different prints and textures you would like in your ideal wardrobe. Solid colors are the easiest to combine, but it’s important to build a wardrobe that you love, not limit yourself to a color palette that you’ll get bored with. If you can choose prints that go together, your wardrobe will be much easier to wear. Think about how the patterns that appeal to you go together: for example, florals and stripes can go together, if they’re in the right color palette. Focus on patterns that you know you can wear with everything else. 4. SEASONALITY Finally, it can be helpful to create two color palettes per year (Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter). For example, in the winter, you might wear less white and more intense/dark colors. You’ll be able to make the most of your sustainable wardrobe if there’s a lot of overlap between seasonal palettes, so keeping your base colors the same and changing up your accent colors will mean that many of your chosen pieces can be worn all year round. Once you’ve finalized your colors and patterns, add them to page 5 of the Sustainable Style Guide . Creating a consistent color palette for your capsule wardrobe will help you make the most of every item in your closet. In time, getting dressed will be a breeze! |
